Short History

• In 1937, a state public library was established in Pagėgiai – at that time the only state public library with a reading room in the Klaipėda Region;
• In 1946, it became the Pagėgiai District Library;
• In 1976, it became a branch of the Šilutė District Central Library;
• On August 10, 2000, by decision No. 62 of the Pagėgiai Municipal Council, the Pagėgiai Municipal Public Library was established;
• The public library system consists of a central library with 4 departments, 8 branches, and a reserve exchange fund;
• Today, the library’s collections contain about 101,000 items of various publications;
• Library visitors have acces to 65 periodical titles;
• More than 100,000 residents visit the libraries annually;
• Each year, visitors borrow over 110,000 publications from the libraries.

Activities

• Cultural, educational, informational, and other activities are carried out in the libraries;
• Each year, library staff organize around 550 events and exhibitions for both adults and children;
• Libraries in the region provide 92 workspaces for visitors;
• The Pagėgiai Municipal Public Library and its 8 branches employ 17 staff members, including 15 involved in core library operations;
• In 2012, the Pagėgiai Municipal Public Library was relocated to new premises in the reconstructed Pagėgiai Municipal Cultural Center (Jaunimo St. 3, Pagėgiai);
• The “newly revived” library features modern and cozy spaces designed to meet the needs of different age groups and various user activities.
